Advocacy in the media landscape

Introduction

Advocacy is generally defined as arguing in favour of a cause or idea, such as promoting the safety of journalists, ending impunity for crimes against journalists, establishing better media laws or regulatory frameworks or demanding transparent recommender systems on social media platforms. Advocacy is an ongoing strategic process of influencing decision makers, systems and structures at different levels aiming at changing policies, laws, attitudes and power relations that affect people.

Specific advocacy activities related to safety of journalists and gender equality can be found on the respective resource spaces.

Types of advocacy

Apart from engaging in advocacy and campaigning activities itself, Free Press Unlimited may also support its partner organisations in carrying out advocacy, in setting up a campaign, in producing certain content, or in exchanging information through partner meetings.

Journalism and / or / vs. advocacy

Sometimes advocacy and journalism are mixed and this warrants a separate discussion.
