The report is an evaluation of a project in Kenya by BBC Media Action, called Sema Kenya. Sema Kenya was a weekly TV and radioshow which was aired between 2012 and 2016. It featured a moderated discussion between a live panel of officials and an audience of ‘ordinary’ Kenyans and was designed to enable individuals, communities and governments to be better informed and more engaged in tackling governance challenges.
Three nationally representative household surveys and one tracker survey were carried out during the project, alongside qualitative studies with audiences, decision makers and governance experts, and two assessments of the capacity-strengthening work with media partners. In total, across these studies we spoke to over 11,000 people in Kenya. This report summarises findings from this portfolio of research to assess and understand the impact of the project.
