This research documents government controls that limit digital space and Internet Freedom in Africa since the year 1999 in 13 countries. The study addresses ‘the proliferation of retrogressive or repressive policies and laws; surveillance and surveillance capacity of governments; digitization programmes; censorship; demands on private sector actors; and the new frontiers like the introduction of Internet related taxes.’
The research report identifies various measures to secure internet freedom and offers suggestions to different stakeholders ‘on the policy, legal, institutional and practice landscape with a view of identifying opportunities for improvement of the digital space.’
